Christmas Preparations (that have nothing to do with shopping, cooking or wrapping)...

Are you steeling yourself for Christmas?

Is the build-up to the 25th of December a build-up of stress in your household?

It's known as the silly season for a reason. Sometimes all the end of year hustle and bustle can send us silly...and not in a fun way. This year, consider an alternative to allowing Christmas to send you silly. How might it feel to position yourself in a good place to deal with all that Christmas brings?

Think of this as your new Christmas Prep List. Or at least put it on the fridge beside that other Christmas Prep List (you know, the one that sends us all silly...).

  • Say YES to functions you know you will enjoy.

  • Say NO to functions you feel obliged to attend, but know you won't enjoy.

  • Make a plan and write a list. Being organised will reduce stress.

  • Book necessary appointments now (not a week before Christmas).

  • Set a Christmas budget and stick to it.

  • Now is not the time to take on anything extra or new. DON'T overload yourself unnecessarily.

  • Spend time with family and friends. If that's what makes you happy.

  • Remember to take time out for you in December. Keep hold of the positive habits and rituals that nourish you during the busyness of December.

If you are a leader in your workplace, be mindful your team may be feeling the pressure of Christmas both personally and professionally. In a professional capacity it is often a chaotic time of the year as deadlines set months ago suddenly loom. December can be a time where others impose their deadlines on you, so prioritise looking after your people.

This is an important time of year for giving reassurance, encouragement and gratitude. Rather than the inevitable Secret Santa, give your team an authentic gift by honouring their successes, their achievements and most of all, their contribution. It will last a whole lot longer than a hastily purchased present.

Oh and one final suggestion. Be sure to have a merry Christmas!
