mindset. n. A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations. An inclination or a habit. Mindset is so powerful that it impacts hugely on our mood, our behaviour and as a result, the outcome of any given situation. How we react to any situation is determined by our mindset. Positive thoughts PLUS positive action results in success.
To illustrate this point let’s look at an example. I often get told how busy my life is. I prefer to say that my life is full. By changing one word, the connotation is instantly more positive. Choosing the language we use carefully - and in particular the verbs we use - can spark a positive mindset. Next time you're in conversation with someone, pay attention to the language you use. Are there any words or phrases you could reframe to spark a more positive mindset?
One of the models I use in leadership and team facilitation sessions is E + R = O (Event + Response = Outcome). An event happens which is out of our control. We then respond to that event, which is entirely within our control. It is our response that will determine the final outcome. Our response is determined by our mindset. When a situation comes up for you, see if you can pause and identify the E + R in your mind. Realise that though the 'E' is beyond your control, you do have control over the 'R'. How will you choose to respond? Will your mindset be positive or negative, open or fixed?
We all know exercise is good for us, but winter can sometimes be a challenge to get out of bed and get moving - we tell ourselves "it's too cold, I'm too tired, it's too hard..." What would happen if we re-framed our thoughts when the morning alarm went, saying “my health and fitness is my priority”? With a mental shift, you can achieve the positive motivation you need to make things happen.
To explore the notion of mindset more, check out Carole Dweck's Mindset website. Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation and author of the book Mindset, first published in 2006. It has since sold over 1.8 million copies and has been updated several times. Her research has focused on why people succeed and how to foster success based on mindset. Her work will literally change the way you think.
